Join us this fall for a glimpse into Georgia’s pre-Contact past! Rich bottomlands of northeastern Georgia were home to American Indians for thousands of years, but we know very little about their daily lives. The Late Mississippian ‘Lamar’ Period (ca. A.D. 1375-1670) may well be the time boasting the heaviest American Indian occupation in northeast Georgia. However, there is abundant evidence for earlier occupations as well.
This September, PIT volunteers, Forest staff, and consulting archaeologists from New South Associates will continue to carry out test excavations at site 9HM190, located on a wide terrace of the Middle Fork of the Broad River. Previous excavations have recovered large quantities of Lamar pottery and we believe that at least one house was located at the site. In 2019 we discovered a large storage pit from the Late Woodland period, dated to A.D. 800-900. This is a time period that is poorly known in this region, and we hope to discover more. The area is beautiful and we hope you will join us in September for this unique and important project!

Special skills: Previous archaeological excavation/testing, survey, mapping, artifact identification, sketching, and/or photography experience helpful, but not required
Minimum age: 10 years old; applicants under the age of 18 must apply with a parent or guardian; guardian MUST submit a separate application and plan to attend
Facilities: FS Lake Russell Campground is located ~15 miles (a 30-minute drive) from site area; amenities vary at the campground; Cornelia and Commerce are full-service communities with hotels/motels, restaurants, and a range of other amenities; volunteers responsible for own lodging/personal camping equipment, food, water, and daily transportation to and from designated meeting area (if opting for in-town accommodations)
