Oregon - Fremont-Winema NF
Closed!  Bly CCC Compound Restoration, Phase II

OR-4257
July 27-31, 2015

Must commit to full session

Join us on the Fremont-Winema National Forest once again, us as we continue our "rebuild" of an important piece of Oregon's historic past! The Bly Ranger District Compound was built between 1936 and 1941 by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and experienced men from the local area. It is made up of nine buildings, which are united aesthetically by a shared ('Rustic') architectural design. The compound was listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) on March 11, 1981, and is considered one of the top two historic compounds in this region. The 'Rustic' architectural style (mostly stone) has held up well over the years, but, as is the case with all constructions, frequent maintenance is required and, due to the historic nature of the compound, care must be taken to preserve the integrity of the buildings, structures and grounds. This PIT project will continue rehabilitation efforts we began in 2012, and will focus on the repair and restoration of the complex's stone masonry. PIT volunteers and FS staff will work together on each task, and volunteers will learn (or hone) and apply masonry skills to the stone work found on the compound, including chimneys, porches, buttresses and veneered walls. The volunteers will not only learn the basics of stone masonry and come away with new skills, but also with the pride that they have helped to preserve an historic gem and provided some much-needed maintenance on the compound's historic structures. We look forward to seeing you again in July!
