The Central Coal and Coke Company ("4-C") Mill was in use from 1902-1920. It is said that, in its prime, it was the largest sawmill west of the Mississippi River. Today, what remains of the mill is within the confines of the beautiful Ratcliff Lake Recreation Area. Remnants of the logging mill and town site are still visible, though some remain undocumented, and there is evidence of later structures from the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) era (ca. 1930s). Additionally, ample evidence of prehistoric occupation is present throughout the vicinity, though it is likewise, undocumented. PIT volunteers and Forest Service staff will survey the recreation area, record features and cultural deposits, and shovel test to determine the depth and overall boundaries of the different temporal components of the site. The Ratcliff Lake Recreation Area offers camping, hiking, fishing, and a number of other enjoyable and relaxing escapes. Join us, and take advantage of what the area has to offer!
