TX-4434

Volunteers must commit to a minimum of 3 days
Join us for an “expedition” to remember! The National Forests and Grasslands in Texas (NFGT) is looking for volunteers this upcoming spring for archaeological field projects on the two most prominent Texas public lands: the Sabine and Davy Crockett National Forests. The first will take place on the Sabine, and the latter two on the Davy Crockett. Projects will involve relocation, delineation and evaluation of sites that, although previously recorded, were insufficiently investigated. The sites we’ll study range from small campsites to potentially seasonal habitations. As mentioned above, the Sabine project will occur first, and will be from May 9-15; the Davy Crocket project will span two sessions from May 18-22, and recommence on June 1, running through the 5th. Volunteers are required to commit to at least three (3) days, but are welcome to join in for duration of each field session.
Work will involve hiking through the woods with shovel and screen while we perform survey and shovel-testing; and shovel-test and formal excavation units will be done within site boundaries. Whether you are an experienced field-jockey or completely new to archaeology, this project is for you – we look forward to seeing you this spring for a hike through the past!
Number of openings: 30 (10 per session)
Special skills: Applicants must be physically capable of hiking moderate distances over frequently difficult terrain and through woodland settings, and in often unpredictable weather; you must also be capable of repetitive kneeling, bending, stooping, and lifting; previous excavation, site recording, drawing, photography, and/or note taking ability helpful, but not required
Minimum age: 14 years old; applicants under the age of 18 must apply with a parent or guardian; guardian MUST submit a separate application and plan to attend
