Come enjoy the fall colors of the Arkansas Ozarks from atop White Rock Mountain! For this PIT project, we need your help to restore and save historic overlook shelters at White Rock Recreation Area (RA), originally constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), Company 748, between 1933 and 1938. White Rock RA is eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) because of its association with the CCC and the overall 1930s, Depression-era, New Deal policies established by President Franklin Roosevelt. It is also a classic representation of the Rustic style of architecture somewhat unique to the CCC. The overlook shelters are in need of roof repairs, rehab of the structural beams, and possibly some masonry. Work will be done in partnership with the local interest group, The Friends of White Rock. The RA is perched atop the summit and bluff lines of White Rock Mountain, known for its remote scenic beauty and landscape views, and there is a great deal to do here in your hours "off the clock:" fishing, swimming, hiking, or just taking in the surrounding beauty. Forest Service chainsaw certifications will be offered on-site, and must be completed prior to start of work. So, come help us restore these beauties; rejuvenate with nature, and walk away with a new certification - we hope to see you this fall!
