Ishi Wilderness PIT Project

Lassen National Forest, Almanor Ranger District, California, 2010
By Adam Gutierrez, PIT Leader

The Ishi Wilderness site monitoring project assessed multiple prehistoric sites for potential damage due to looting, cattle grazing, erosion and other effects. Over seven days, six volunteers received specialized training in compass use, land navigation, map reading, site damage recognition and recording, GPS use, and form preparation. Led by archaeologists, this specific training was utilized by the volunteers to locate known sites, assess their conditions, and address potential means for preventing further damage. Through the efforts of this PIT project important information concerning vulnerable prehistoric sites was discovered. The information gained will be invaluable, and will help in further protecting these significant cultural resources.
