Oregon - Siuslaw NF
Closed! Let's Get Digital: Digitizing Forest Homestead Records, Part II
OR-4231
April 6-10; 13-17, 2015
Must commit to one full session; may participate in both
Join us on the Siuslaw National Forest this spring for "Part II" of our "let's get digital" movement! During this project, PIT volunteers will continue the important task of digitizing over 3,900 original land records dating from the early 20th century. These records contain invaluable information on homesteading and early Forest Service management, and must be organized and scanned before being sent to the National Archives for long-term storage and curation.
Living in the "digital age" provides incredible opportunities for the management of historic records like these. The goal of the project will be to capture all of this information electronically, and store it in such a way as to make it available for use not only by the Siuslaw NF, but also by researchers who want to explore the local and regional history of this period. We will work in a computer lab at the Central Coast Ranger Station in Waldport, located on the beautiful Oregon Coast. Volunteers' tasks will include record organization, scanning, and entering data into an MS Access database. The Oregon Coast is a beautiful workplace, so please join us for the project once again, and in those hours "off the clock," enjoy the many recreational opportunities the area has to offer!
