Volunteers must commit to entire session
Join us on the White Mountain National Forest (WMNF) to help with an archaeological survey in Ellsworth, New Hampshire! This October, PIT volunteers and Forest staff will conduct a pedestrian survey to relocate existing archaeological sites in Ellsworth. This area in New Hampshire played an important part in early 19th-century hill country farmsteading. Today it is a popular place for year-round recreation, and many of the old roads are now hiking and snowmobile trails. Much of the area was previously surveyed in the 1980s, but little work has been done in the area since that time. When we find a site this year, we will document features and artifacts visible on the surface, make site sketches as needed, take digital photos, and get accurate GPS location data. If we’re lucky, we may locate new archaeological sites and record those as well!
On Monday, October 16th, we will have a training session, then break up into small groups and begin the intensive survey of the town. It should be very interesting, and we’ll have a lot of fun, so join us this fall for a “hike through the past” in Ellsworth!
Please note that current COVID-19 protocols as recommended by the CDC and Forest Service will be followed to ensure the safety of volunteers and staff.
