PIT volunteers identifying ceramics on the Apache-Sitgreaves NF

AZ-44956
April 22-26, 2024
Volunteers must commit to entire session

Come join archeologists from the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests (ASNFs) for our “Rounding out Roundy” PIT project. In the late 1990s the ASNFs hosted a Passport in Time (PIT) project in partnership with the University of Arizona at Roundy Pueblo, a prehistoric Mogollon archeological site. During that PIT project, testing and excavation techniques were used to recover data from the Pueblo. Hundreds of artifacts and other information were collected during this effort, all containing an invaluable source of information on the inhabitants of Roundy Pueblo.

Unfortunately not all the artifacts have been processed and identified. So, we need your help to catalog the collections! During our project, you will learn how to identify Mogollon ceramics, and you’ll get an introduction to stone artifact identification in this region. Information captured in these artifacts will help bring to life a complex story of how the people of Roundy Pueblo lived, and how they interacted with their neighbors. We hope you’ll join us this spring!

Please note that current COVID-19 protocols as recommended by the CDC and Forest Service will be followed to ensure the safety of volunteers and staff.
