Must commit to entire session

The Sierra NF is seeking a small group of PIT volunteers who will get an opportunity to join a backpacking trip into the wilderness to help conduct archaeological survey. While much of the Sierra has been surveyed, the high elevation wilderness remains poorly documented, despite its known importance in Native American and historic pioneer cultures. We will be searching for and recording historic trails, prehistoric sites, historic camps, and cabins. Please note that this project may not be for everyone: we will pack in, pack out, and conduct survey at high elevations, covering some rough terrain. The event will require up to 30 miles of hiking and camping over several days. Camping will be dispersed and primitive – filtering water, sleeping in tents, cooking over open fires, and seeking your own “facilities.” But, if this type of “get away from it all” setting is appealing, this project is for you! We hope to see you this summer!

Number of openings: 4

Special skills: Special skills required: volunteers must be capable of and experienced with hiking long distances, over rugged terrain, and at high elevations (up to 9,000 to 12,000 feet above sea level) in a variety of weather conditions; volunteers must also be experienced in backpacking and primitive, leave-no-trace camping; volunteers responsible for own camping equipment, water filter, food, and transportation to initial meeting location

Minimum age: 18 years old

Facilities: Volunteers will camp in dispersed, primitive settings; no facilities; developed campgrounds may be accessible the night before the trip begins

Nearest towns: Project will be mobile, and based out of dispersed campsites

Applications due: June 4, 2018
