The Northern Bedrock Historic Preservation Corps (NHBPC), in partnership with the research branch of the US Forest Service, has entered into a Memorandum of Agreement to restore and adaptively reuse the Halfway Ranger District Ranger Dwelling site within the Superior National Forest. The site was constructed in 1934 by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Volunteers will serve alongside NBHPC crews and technical specialists during the project. Our work at the Station this year will involve repairing/replacing and treating and staining logs and fascia boards; scraping and painting structures; and repairing/replacing windows and screens. If time allows, we’ll also undertake various other restoration projects throughout Halfway Ranger Station’s 12-acre site. This is an historic gem, so we hope you’ll join us once again to give it the tender, loving care it both needs and deserves!
Please note: Strict COVID-19 protocols will be followed, including the wearing of masks, social distancing, etc. Additionally, given current national and global circumstances, some aspects of the project may be subject to change. The project leader will notify all selectees should this occur.

Special skills: Volunteers for the project must possess basic carpentry skills, and must be physically capable of repetitive activities such as lifting, bending, kneeling, standing, etc. for extended periods each day. Previous experience with log and window maintenance and repair techniques, experience with or interest in indoor and/or outdoor painting, plumbing, construction, historic preservation/restoration, and/or general maintenance skills also a plus!
Minimum age: 18 years old
Facilities: Volunteers will likely have access to indoor facilities, potentially including bunks, a very basic kitchen facility, and showers (all contingent upon spring construction timelines and/or compliance with COVID-19 restrictions); limited space is available for tent camping or small campers on-site; South Kawishiwi River Campground, located within walking distance from the project site, has tent and RV/electrical sites; numerous resorts, hotels and campgrounds within 15 miles of the project site; off-site lodging will require reservations, and fees may apply. Ely is a full-service community with hotels/motels, restaurants, and a full range of other amenities; volunteers responsible for own bedding/lodging/camping equipment, food, water, and daily transportation to and from designated meeting area (if opting to lodge off-site). Shared, simple but hearty meals with the NBHPC crew will be provided for project participants.
